Becoming your own boss – the Perfectly Autistic story

Kelly and Hester Grainger

Co-founders of Perfectly Autistic

Mental Health at Work has partnered with Simply Business to support the UK’s self-employed with their mental health and wellbeing. Together we surveyed more than 700 small business owners to understand their challenges. Now we want to start a conversation and break the stigma surrounding mental health at work through our brand new Self-Employed Support Hub and the Mind Your Business initiative from Simply Business.

There are lots of reasons why you might choose to start your own business. For Kelly and Hester, their passion for improving the working lives of neurodiverse people let them to found their consultancy Perfectly Autistic.

We brought Kelly and Hester to Mental Health at Work’s HQ to ask them about the highs and lows of running their own business, and find out how they look after their own mental wellbeing when times get tough.

We also asked Kelly and Hester to tell us about their firm’s message. They explained how hiring neurodiverse people can bring great benefits to your workplace – but it’s also important to consider ways to help neurodiverse people flourish in an environment that might not have been designed with them in mind.
