Deborah Lee on mental health: leading the way and tackling stigma

Organisation: NHS Employers

Podcast episode

When Deborah Lee, Chief Executive of Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, decided to write a blog for staff about her own mental health issues, the response was much greater than she expected.

In this podcast, she and others talk about that moment and the effect it had on Trust staff, from people coming forward with their own stories to the development of new wellbeing approaches and resources. Deborah shares a little of her story, but more importantly discusses why it’s important to open up about mental health and why leaders in particular have a responsibility to set the tone.

The episode is just over 22 minutes long, and you can listen to it directly from the NHS Employers website or on SoundCloud. It’s a really useful introduction for any organisation – not just those in the health sector – to the power of sharing personal stories.
